When you receive this newsletter we will have already started the Holiday Season.

What this means to different people depends on our situations. For some it is a time of being alone, for others it is a time of being with friends, and still others it is time spent with family
and friends.

Whatever your category we must remember that we are members of the Great Fellowship of Alcoholics Anonymous and we should always remember that.

Remember our PRIMARY PURPOSE is to stay Sober and help other Alcoholics achieve Sobriety. With this in mind ask yourself if you are doing your part.

Are you attending meetings? Are you participating in A. A. or are you just attending meetings?
By participating I refer to my favorite subject SERVICE WORK. What am I involved in? Am I doing things in my Group (chairing meetings, making coffee, being a greeter, or a trusted servant)? Am I active in my District? Intergroup Representative, General Service
Representative? Central Office work am I on the 12 step call list? Do I volunteer answering the Hotline?

Do I do any SERVICE WORK?

Mike gave the Intergroup report. There is a Friday 5PM-10PM and a Momday 5P-10P shift open. Alternates are always welcome.

Assembly Information - The Host Committee needs baskets (and goodies to put in them) and volunteers. Please go back and discuss this with your homegroup. They also need a meal to be provided. John B said there are several groups interested in helping with meals. The Host Committee meets every 3rd Thursday of each month at the Flatiron,6: Gene said Mike (from Vonore) will coordinate Hospitality.

The 2nd Quarter Assembly will be in Murfreesboro. The contact number is 1-866-678-2378. There is no registration code. Rooms are $89/night+tax.

3rd Quarter Assembly will be in Chattanooga, at the Chattanooga Choo Choo July 22-24. The rooms are $92/night+tax.

The 4thQuarter Assembly will be a voting Assembly and will be held in Nashville. All Assembly dates, locations and other information is available at http://www.area64assembly.org/portal/Calendar.aspx.

CPC/PI - Gordon said their Committee meets every Saturday at St John's Cathedral (downtown) at 10 AM.

Still looking for an Archivist.

Corrections - Ken said there are only 3 people left of the Committee. Right now they have the jails covered. The jail meetings are Monday 7-8PM. The Correction Committee meets the first Thursday of each month at the Flatiron, 6:30PM.

Grapevine and Events - Nothing new to report.

New Business - Lynne said the Host Committee would prefer to display basket items so folks can see everything they have won should their number be drawn. Miss Jean donated some baskets. They possibly may display some items and have baskets made up too.

Group News - Nothing new at this time.

Intergroup Meeting

Meeting was held on Sunday Nov. 7th at Rockford.

Discussion was held on progress for on-line edition. Peter reported that Thomas B. was out of Country for job related business, however he was on web site domain for edition.

Ben advised that programs would be easily set up and could be handled at Intergroup office with minimum of instructions. Reps reported that no-one has given any opposition to on-line proposal noting instead the cost saving for intergroup. Reminder from Ben that we will publish mail out
edition in Jan., March, May and July.

Peter brought attention to the fact that service work is lacking in all areas. He referred to attendance at District 50/51 GSR meeting in October and Intergroup participation at meeting.

Report on Treasury and Hot-line were given.

Ben pointed out that Intergroup blog is available for any holiday event listings that do not make the newsletters. Contact me and I will get them to Ben.

CHAIRMAN'S MESSAGE

The hot weather is behind us. The leaves have turned their fall colors' and are now falling. The seasons have changed. We are looking forward to a new horizon. A new time of year. A new reason to remember what the past was like and what changes have come to our lives as a result of the Fellowship of Alcoholics Anonymous. Do we express our gratitude every day?

No matter what happens in our life, if we don't drink as a result of it (good or bad) we should remember that gratitude with acceptance is the key to our sobriety.

Are we doing all we can to show are Gratitude or are we just skating along letting the other guy do the work? In every region our Central Offices are in need of volunteers to cover the HOT-LINES. Are you showing your GRATITUDE by volunteering for this service work in your area?

Assembly Information - There was a pancake breakfast fundraise at Park 40 for the Host Committee. John A said it went from 8-10:15 AM. He said they really didn't give a whole lot of notice about this one beforehand but will do so in the future. They need money, baskets (and goodies to put in them) and volunteers. Please go back and discuss this with your homegroup. This is YOUR Assembly (50/51). The 4th Quarter Assembly will be October 21st-24th. Gravpevine and Events - Dennis thanked everyone who participated in the subscription drive. Prizes will be awarded. He said subscriptions are down. Prices may go up and they need articles to be submitted. Right now it is $28.50/year. There is special pricing for professionals. The monthly meeting of the Grapevine Committee is the last Tuesday at 7PM. He also thanked all those who helped with the ice cream social. He said they didn't make alot of money but they had a lot of fun. The Events Committee is open for event suggestions. Right now there are no events scheduled.

Old Business - A motion was taken back to the groups to donate $1,000 from the District to the Assembly Host Committtee. This motion was seconded and carried. The donation will be made.

New Business - John W said that we need a new Archivist. Mike will take the stuff available and store it at Intergroup. Please discuss this with your homegroups.

Group News - September 30th the Metro Group will celebrate it's 10 year Anniversary during the noon meeting. The Athens Group has disbanned after 50 years. The Pathfinders have an unofficial Big Book Study on Tuesday nights at 7PM.

THERE IS A TREMENDOUS NEED FOR VOLUNTEERS TO DO SERVICEWORK WITHIN AA. WHY, YOU ASK,? WELL SERVICE WORK IS THAT AREA THAT HELPS TO CARRY THE MESSAGE , IT HELPS GROUPS MAINTAIN A CONNECTION BETWEEN THE GROUP AND THE GENERAL AA PROGRAM, IT GETS NEWCOMERS INVOLVED IN SOMETHING THAT MAY KEEP THEM SOBER, SOMETHING TO GET OUTSIDE OF THEIR OWN SELF. IT KEEPS THE AA COMMUNTY ALIVE AND WORKING.

WHAT KIND OF SERVICE WORK IS THERE? WELL FOR STARTERS, GETTING INVOLVED WITH YOUR GROUP, SUCH AS SECRETARY, GSR, OR INTERGROUP REP TO RESPRESENT YOUR GROUP ON MATTERS OUTSIDE OF YOUR OWN MEETING. IT CAN ALSO MEAN GETTING INVOLVED IN YOUR LOCAL DISTRICT COMMITTEE, SUCH AS CORRECTION, PUBLIC INFORMATION, TREATMENT, ETC, ETC.

WHO SHOULD GET INVOLVED IN SERVICE WORK? ANYONE WHO SAYS THEY ARE AN ALCOHOLIC, FROM SENIOR MEMBERS TO THE NEWCOMERS WITH JUST A SHORT TIME IN THIS PROGRAM... SERVICEWORK IS MORE THAN JUST SHOWING UP FOR A MEETING, IT MEANS RESPONIBILITIES, WORK, DEDICATION, AND AN OUNCE OF EXTRA TIME, PERHAPS SPENDING A FEW HOURS AT NIGHT ANSWERING THE HOTLINE...

HOW MUCH TIME IS INVOLVED? GENERALLY NOT AS MUCH AS MOST PEOPLE THINK, MOST MEETINGS SUCH AS DISTRICT OR INTERGROUP LAST ONLY AN HOUR FOR INFORMATION TO BE PASS AROUND AND TO BE RECIVED. COMMITTEE MEETINGS ARE GENERALLY THE SAME.

SERVICE WORK IS AN ABSOLUTE ESSENTIAL TO OUR COMMUNITY, MANY GROUPS DON’T HAVE A GSR OR INTERGROUP REP TO FIND OUT WHAT IS GOING ON AROUND THEM. THEY ARE BASICALLY ISOLATED WITHIN THEIR OWN MEETING. SPONSORS SHOULD ENCOURAGE THEIR SPONSEE TO GET INVOLVED, NEW PEOPLE CAN BRING IN NEW INSIGHTS, KEEPING THIS PROGRAM GOING A LOT LONGER.

AS IT IS NOW, MOST OF THE SERVICE WORK IS DONE BY THE SAME DEDICATED FOLKS, WHO FILL IN BECAUSE NO ONE ELSE WILL STEP UP, AND FOR THOSE WE THANK YOU, FOR YOU ARE THE BACKBONE IN THIS AREA, BUT EVEN THESE FOLKS NEED A BREAK.

PLEASE DON’T THINK “I DON’T WANT TO BET INVOLVED”, OR “ I DON’THAVE THE TIME," THAT KIND OF THINKING WILL DESTROY AA IN A HEARTBEAT, YOUR ARE INVOLVED IF YOU ARE AN ALCOHOLIC, DOING SOBER THINGS WILL KEEP YOU SOBER. AND HELP SOMEONE ALONG THE WAY.

Two questions have been asked in the past month that I would like to answer:

1. Why do we need a Hot Line and

2. How does Hot-line work?

In any area where Alcoholics Annymous functions the hotline has one purpose. That purpose is to provide information and support to people fighting the disease of Alcoholism. Have we fogotten our 5th Tradition and/or our Preemble which deal with our primary purpose?

In some areas we have 24/7 hot lines in others it is manned on a availability basis.

To find out how it works in your area check your Intergroup or Central Office Representative.

This is how we have it set up in East Tennessee:

Calls to our hot-line number 974-9888 are answered 7 days a week from 9A.M. t0 10 P.M. On weekdays they are answered form 9-5 in our Intergroup office and from 5-10 by a volunteer on thier land line or mobile phone. On weekends and holidays all calls are answered by volunteers working 3 shifts each day. Our hot-line volunteers are rotated every other week to answer calls.

The calls we receive are for either meeting information or help. Meeting information calls are handled by our volunteers. Help calls are referred to other volunteers (who have requested to be put on our 12 Step list) forcall backs to the person requesting help.

Help can be in the form of someone needing meeting directions, a ride or someone to talk too. We refer all calls to persons of the same gender.

To be on our hotline or 12 Step list one year of continuous sobriety is required.

Intergroup Minutes

Meeting was held at Rockford and was opened at 1:05 by Pete with the Serenity prayer.

Pete read from the AA Service Manual the 3rd Concept "Right of Decision" and 4th Tradition explaining briefly how each affected Intergroup.

Business Conducted:
1. Hot-line discussion on need for volunteers and back up volunteers to keep hot-line functioning. Thomas B. (Blount County Group) suggested that information be put in newsletter. Pete told him it would be in next newsletter. (see Chairman's message)

2. Discussion on Unity Newsletter. Peter brought up fact how lack of subscriptions was falling below the minimum postal requirement for mailing. The monthly cost of newsletter is $180.00 and mailing is $93.00 With less than 150 paid subscriptions we are losing $2,600.00 a year.
After much discussion a motion was made by Jay J. and second by Kay S. that Starting Jan 2011 it be published every 2 months and canceled with July 2011 edition.

We have an on-line edition since November 2008 and will use that as our monthly means of communication. Motion was passed by all reps in attendance.

Jay J.(Rockford) and Ben S. (Monroe County) will work on a new format for on-line edition.

1. South East Regional Forum next year.

2. Atlanta 2015 and Detroit 2020 International Conventions.

3. Freedom Group men's and women's meeting at Blount County Jail.

Blount County Jail Meeting.

I'm the GSR for the Freedom Group (Blount County Jail Men's Group) and we
are looking for volunteers to help carry the message into the jail. We are
currently holding meetings at 6:30pm on Tuesdays and we get a large turn-out.
It's been so successful that we been invited to explore the possibility of
holding a meeting on Wednesday nights as well. Before we can do that, we need a
few more volunteers.

The Sheriff's staff, deputies, and correctional officers have been great to work
with and the inmates are very grateful for the opportunity.
We do ask that volunteers have at least one year of sobriety and have a sponsor.
If anyone is interested in learning more or wants more info, they can email me

The Freedom Group is also looking for softcover Big Books. The hardcover books
cannot be used in the Blount County Jail.

Fall Recovery Campout

Greetings all:

The 48th Great Smoky Mountain Recovery Campout is scheduled for Memorial Day Weekend, 2010, at Greenbrier Island Campground 500 yards off of US 321 on Pittman Center Road (TN Highway 416/ address: 5406 Pittman Center Rd, Gatlinburg, Tennessee 37738). After the record heat for some of us this summer, the promise of fall is a welcome reminder that another Recovery Campout is right around the corner.

As the fall campout has become increasingly popular, take the time if you have not made reservations to call Darlene or Ron at 865-436-4243 for RV or tent reservations very soon as the campsites have been filling up quickly in recent years. I was one of about 50,000 members at the International Convention in San Antonio. What an uplifting event! Planning ahead for 2015 for the next International Convention in Atlanta Georgia. Plenty of time to start saving. $5.00 a week will get you $1,300. What a great honor again to be a greeter at the meetings: can't get away from doing service work.

In speaking with other people one theme ran thru almost every conversation. What has happened to the Spirit of Volunteering for Service work in Alcoholics Anonymous? Hotlines are being forced to curtail hours or in some cases close down. Reason being - no volunteers. Group donations in most areas are down some as much as 70%. Programs in Correctional Institutions,
treatment Facilities, and Inter groups are being curtailed - no Volunteers!

We want the hand of AA always to be their but we cannot do it unless we give back what was so
freely given to us.

Our Declaration of Unity:

This we owe to A. A.'s future
To place our common welfare first;
To keep our fellowship united.
For on A. A. unity depend our lives;
And the lives of those to come.

Am I doing my part? Am I volunteering? Am I getting my Sponsees and Group involved in our future?

Whenever anyone reaches out for help I want the hand of AA always to be there.

This is the Basis of our 12 Traditions (to make sure AA survives.)

Our 7th Tradition deals with our Finances. We are self supporting through our own contributions.

These contributions, which come mainly from Our Group meetings, keep AA always there. From these contributions we not only support our Home Groups but also our General Service Office, our District General Service, our Area and our Intergroup Office.

It is important and neceesary that regular contributions are made to these groups. Without finances to run them AA can fail. While I know the economy is tight at this time I also know that we need Our Fellowship to survive.

Please make sure your Group is sending regular contributions.

12 STEPS TO DELIVERING AN EFFECTIVE A.A. TALK

When it comes to carrying the A.A. message, Dr. Silkworth states in "The Doctor's Opinion" in the Big Book, "The message which can interest and hold these alcoholic people must have depth and weight. In nearly all cases their ideals must be grounded in a power greater than themselves, if they are to re-create their lives." This "message" is most effective when delivered is such a manner that a still suffering alcoholic of whatever description (whether a prospect, newcomer, or veteran member) may have an opportunity to make an accurate identification of their problem depth) and have made known to them a solution for that problem (weight). In fact, any sober A.A. can effectively "carry the message" when asked to speak at an A.A. meeting provided they have "taken the steps" of Alcoholics Anonymous and follow a few simple suggestions:

1) Dress appropriately, respectfully; be on time, introduce yourself an as alcoholic (only), avoid the use of multiple identification; extend thanks, gratitude.

2) Greet the newcomers and invite them into the fellowship of A.A., citing something of a positive nature directed towards them from the Big Book which extends a warm welcome to all.

3) Share a brief overview of your family background (in a very general way) prior to drinking.

4) Describe your first drinking experience whereby you realized the effect produced by alcohol.

5) Relate pertinent elements of "The Doctor's Opinion" as you share your drinking history/experience.

6) Share your drinking history as it exemplifies the progressive nature of the illness of alcoholism as outlined in the basic text of A.A. (To avoid confusing and/or alienating newcomers, respect A.A.'s "singleness of purpose." Minimize historical accounting of problems other than alcohol; i.e., drug addiction, use, compulsive overeating, the child within, being a victim, etc., as we want them to primarily identify with the progression of alcoholism.)

7) Side-step the use of vulgar and obscene language while sharing as we are a program of attraction and that is surely a distraction and it presents a negative community image of our A.A. way of life to those "outside" who may be visiting with us to learn about alcoholism and Alcoholics Anonymous.

8) Describe the events surrounding your hitting bottom and what led you to A.A., to your Home Group and to your Sponsor.

9) Share your experience in a general way of "taking the Steps."

10) Mention your experience with service work and working with others and the benefits you realized as a result thereof.

11) Share your personal experience resulting from developing a personal relationship with God, as you understand God.

12) Summarize your pitch; invite newcomers to join us on the "Road of Happy Destiny"; thank those who invited you and close-on time.

These 12 suggestions were derived from listening to, identifying and outlining the similarities of structure, content and order (of delivery) of the talks of our beloved carriers of the A.A. message, and can be reconciled with The Doctor's Opinion and the first 164 pages of the Big Book. Also, it's always a good idea to be genuine and enthusiastic.The above are thoughts and opinions of others. They do not speak for or represent the A.A. Fellowship.An indignant dowager comes upon a very tired and very drunk on the street. She says to him, "If I were in your condition I would shoot myself!" He hiccups back, "If you were in my condition, lady, you'd miss!"

Meeting was held on Sunday may 2 at rockford fellowship hall.

Meeting was called to order at 1:15 by Peter and ended at 2 pm.

Old bussiness: New 12 step list were published and given to Michael at office and co-ordinator Kathy to be distributed to the hot line volunteers. It was noted that certain areas had no contacts because either the area did not respond to request and/or people listed as contacts were no longer available when contacted.

Hot line is full but we can always use back ups.

New business: Next two Intergroup meetings will be conducted via e- mail.

We are in the process of setting up a Facebook page for East Tn Intergroup . So as to pass on current information.

Next meeting will be August 1st.

District 50/51 Representative Meeting
May 3, 2010 6:30 PM

Darlene opened the meeting with the Serenity Prayer. The Secretary was absent, so Ruth took minutes. Gordon read the 12 Traditions. The previous month’s minutes were read by all and accepted as written.

District Financial Report: John W. (treasurer) couldn’t be here, so he sent a copy of the report. Beginning balance: $1,380.46. $254.59 in Deposits. $250 in Expenses (for the corrections workshop in Gallatin). The Assembly Planning Committee’s beginning balance was $25.32, plus $750 seed money from the Area, for a total of $775.32. The Combined Ending Balance was $2,160.87.

A signup sheet was passed around so we could contact each other between district meetings.

Intergroup Report: Mike gave the report. He said donations are up this year, so Intergroup is doing pretty well so far. He used some money from savings to buy literature. Ask your groups to subscribe to the newsletter – we need 200+ subscriptions to continue to get our discounted mailing rate at the post office. Newsletter subscriptions are $5/year. All the hotline shifts are currently full. They just finished updating the 12th step contact list and are making copies to distribute.

Assembly Info: The 3rd Quarter Area 64 Assembly will be in Oak Ridge July 23-25, 2010 at the Doubletree hotel. Rooms are $96/night plus tax. All this information is available on the Area 64 website www.area64assembly.org

January 2011 Assembly in Knoxville: We’ve been kicking around ideas for fundraisers – the first fundraiser for the Area 64 Assembly will be the Best Ball Golf Tournament June 27th at 1:30 at Whittle Springs Golf Course. There is a $45 fee. Contact John A. at 363-8030 if you’re interested in playing. Cutoff date for participants will be June 23. See the announcement in the newsletter for more info.

The biggest expenses for hosting the assembly are food and coffee. Everyone is encouraged to see if their home groups want to help by providing a meal Friday evening or Saturday night – it’s a great way to get involved. Any group contributions the host committee are welcomed – be sure to write “1st Quarter Assembly” in the memo line on checks for group contributions.

Assembly committee meets on the 3rd Thursday of each month at 6:30 pm at the Flatiron.

Need volunteers to help form committees for registration, coffee, flyers, banner, hospitality, speaker, fundraisers, seed money from Area 64, Reports for Assembly and Convention committee and Area 64 business meeting, treasurer, theme, hotel liaison, disc jockey if there’s a dance, agenda, taper for business meetings, secretary, raffle baskets if we do a raffle, chairperson/liaison.

Everyone is encouraged to attend and help plan the assembly. Any AA member is eligible and encouraged to serve.

Archives: No report. If you are interested in serving as the archives chair, come to the May District meeting.

CPC/PI: Gordon gave the report. Gordon has responded to another request for information about AA from a doctor’s group. He’s putting together teams of AA members who are preparing to give talks to professionals who request info about AA. The committee meets on the 2nd Saturday of each month starting on May 8 at 10:00 a.m. at St. John’s.

Corrections: Ken and George thanked the district for sending them to the corrections workshop in Gallatin. They got to swap ideas with other AA’s from all over the state who are involved in corrections. There was a “workshop on the workshop,” where they discussed how to best serve the needs of Area 64 Corrections. One issue that came up was the lack of communication, so the area is making a list of the different facilities and who’s going in where. One suggestion from the workshop was that district corrections chairs go to groups in their districts and drum up interest, not just in district meetings. The Corrections committee meets the first Thursday of the month at 6:30 p.m. at the Flatiron.

Grapevine/Events: Dennis gave the report. Five people attended the committee meeting, and they went over the Grapevine Handbook. Get ready, because Grapevine Reps are going to visit groups in the district to help people get involved. Dennis brought flyers for the 3-month long grapevine subscription drive starting in June to raise awareness and subscriptions. The Grapevine committee took some more old Grapevines with AA meeting schedules inside them to professional buildings to put in the waiting rooms. Come find out what the grapevine is, what it does, and how you can help on the last Tuesday of the month at 7:00 p.m. at the Flat Iron. To get involved with the Grapevine or Events committees, email dennisoxner@yahoo.com.

The Events committee is hosting a district event: East TN Past Delegates Panel Discussion on June 20 from 11:00-1:30 at the Metro Group. Past Delegates John A., John W. (one of our oldest delegates), and hopefully Becky and Ralph will share their experience with service and eat dinner with us.

Treatment: Dennis did a fantastic job speaking to the alcoholics in treatment at Cornerstone! Thank you Dennis! To volunteer to help carry the AA message to alcoholics who are in treatment by telling your story at Cornerstone on the last Wednesday of the month at 7:30, call Ruth 310-7889.

As always I have to look around and remember how grateful I should be for the gift of sobrierty that has been given me.

I am currently (may 11 ) in nashville and have been since May 3 rd working on the disaster relief as a result of the floods. Where would I be today if not for what the great fellowship of AA has given me? I would not even venture to guess. Where would you be without this fellowship? Are you giving back to this fellowship or are you just taking from it and letting others do the work? Service work to our fellowship is what keeps it alive for us. Are you doing your part?

The Athens - Sweetwater Group is starting a men’s AAWOL Program (Alcoholics Anonymous Way Of Life). It is designed to enhance your knowledge and workings of the 12 steps of AA. District 50/51 Representative Meeting

The previous month’s minutes were read by all, and it was noted that the minutes should have mentioned that Michelle, who works at the sheriff’s office and is the contact for AA’s coming into the jail, is also an AA member and is really working hard to get us in!
District Financial Report: John W. gave the report. He said that we now have some money for the assembly host committee. He explained that the two separate entities – the District and the Assembly Host Committee – are using the same bank account. Since in the past there have been some problems with treasurers, John said he will be bringing the books with the bank statements to each district meeting so anyone can look at them. This will help provide extra accountability and help keep the treasurer honest.
Intergroup Report: Mike gave the report. There were 5 newsletter subscription renewals, and he purchased about $1,100 worth of books to restock the supply. All the hotline shifts are currently full.

District 50/51 Representative Meeting
March 1, 2010 6:30 PM

Kelly opened the meeting with the Serenity Prayer. Gordon read the 12 Traditions. Introductions were made.

Corrections:Michelle attended the district meeting to help with questions about bringing AA into the jail. She works at the Knox County Sherriff’s Department and is the new contact for AA’s coming into the jail. She will keep in touch with the volunteer coordinator. She said the jail can do volunteer orientations for AA volunteers and church volunteers at the same time. The background check on volunteer applications is out of her hands, and some applications take longer than others to get approved. She said there are currently openings for bringing AA meetings to both the men and women in the jail. There are openings for AA women’s meetings in the jail Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Fridays from 5:00-6:00.

The Corrections committee meets the first Thursday of every month at 6:30 at the Flatiron, and they need volunteers -- see David H. for paperwork (740-6650).

District Financial Report: John W. gave the report. Since neither DCMs was able to attend the Memphis assembly, the $560 that was to cover the expense of sending them to the assembly was returned and deposited.

Intergroup Report: Mike gave the report. To volunteer for the hotline, call Mike (at intergroup) or Kathy (256-6127).

Assembly Info: 2nd Quarter Assembly in Chattanooga March 19-21, 2010 at the Chattanooga Choo Choo.

January 2011 Assembly in Knoxville: Assembly committee meets on the 3rd Thursday of each month at 6:30 pm at the Flatiron. Need volunteers to help form committees for registration, coffee, flyers, banner, hospitality, speaker, fundraisers, seed money from Area 64, Reports for Assembly and Convention committee and Area 64 business meeting, treasurer, theme, hotel liaison, disc jockey if there’s a dance, agenda, taper for business meetings, secretary, raffle baskets if we do a raffle, chairperson/liaison.

Everyone is encouraged to attend and help plan the assembly. Any AA member is eligible and encouraged to serve.

Highnooners group has volunteered to provide a meal at the assembly.

CPC/PI: Gordon gave the report. There will be a workshop Sat., March 27 at 11:00 a.m. at St. John’s Episcopal Cathedral, W. Cumberland and Walnut. Come find out how you can get involved with the CPC, PI, Treatment, Corrections, Grapevine, and Events Committees.

Archives: No report.

Grapevine/Events: Dennis gave the report. He’s planning a grapevine subscription drive. Dennis explained that the Grapevine is self-supporting, not supported by GSO. The Grapevine committee took old Grapevines to professional buildings to put in the waiting rooms and made contact with some people at St. Mary’s. To get involved with the Grapevine or Events committees, email Dennis.

Treatment: Come to the workshop March 27 at 11:00!

New Business: John W. made a motion to give $50 from district account to the 1st Quarter Assembly planning committee. A vote was taken, and the motion was approved.

Kelly resigned from her position as DCM for district 51. John B., the previous alternate DCM for district 51, was elected DCM. Ken was elected the new alternate DCM 51.

7th tradition was not passed.
The meeting closed with the Lord’s Prayer.

1) Knox 2011 Assembly at Radison needs help. Meetings are the third Thursday of each month at 6:30 at the Flat Iron

2) The 2011 South Eastern Convention is in November in South Carolina and they needs help as well.

3) The San Antonio deadline is May 10th for the $95 registration, most lodging is already booked (Pete please add any info you can to this as I didn't get it all, the conversation trailed off to personal stuff at this point)

1st sunday in April is Easter, so the next Intergroup Meeting will be held on Sunday, May 2nd at Rockford at 1:15 PM.

Our preamble tells us our main purpose is to stay sober and help other Alcoholics to achieve sobriety. It also tells us we are not affiliated with any other groups or organizations.

With this in mind it is OK to volunteer at different places that deal with people suffering from the disease of Alcoholism, however, we must remember that we do this as individuals not as representatives of our Fellowship.

Our various areas do have committees that send people to Institutions, Jails, and Schools
etc., as representatives of our Fellowship.

So, let us remember our 5th and 6th traditions when carrying our message. Always remember
our declaration of Unity is to preserve our Fellowship through our 12 Traditions.

District 50/51 Representative Meeting
January 4, 2010 6:30 PM
Darlene opened the meeting with the Serenity Prayer. Gordon read the 12 Traditions.
The previous month’s minutes were read by all and accepted as written.
District Financial Report: John W. gave the report. Paid $70 to renew P.O. Box rental. Voted to approve the financial report. John W. said the district now pays the Alano Club $12.50/month to rent the space for the monthly district rep meeting instead of passing the hat each month and paying that amount to the Alano Club. John W. had $27 from past 7th traditions and asked what should be done with that money. John A. said that the district body is supported by the groups it serves, that the groups decide how much money the district body should have, and that the groups determine how the district gets and uses money. Gordon made a motion to deposit the $27 into the district checking account. Motion was seconded and approved.
A check in the amount of $250 was written for the previous District 50 DCM to go to the 3rd quarter assembly, but she was unable to attend. John W. tore up the check that had been written to pay for Pam’s assembly expenses that she didn’t end up needing.
Intergroup Report: Mike gave the intergroup report. Since group donations to Intergroup have been down for the past year, Intergroup has not been able to stock as much literature inventory as it used to.
There is a Hotline opening every other Saturday from 1:00-5:00. Call Mike (at intergroup) or Kathy (256-6127) to volunteer.

John W. opened the meeting with the Serenity Prayer. Wayne read the 12 Traditions. Introductions were made. John W. expressed his appreciation for letting him serve as DCM.
The previous month’s minutes were read by all and accepted as written.
District Financial Report: John W. gave the report. A motion was made to pay $70 to renew the district’s P.O. box for another year. Motion carried.
Intergroup Report: Mike gave the intergroup report. Overall, Intergroup received $2,917.90 and paid out $2,541.39. The checking balance is $1,690.19. The savings balance is $5,759.24.
There is a Hotline opening on Monday from 5:00-10:00. Call Mike (at intergroup) or Kathy (256-6127) to volunteer.
Assembly Info: 1st Quarter Voting Assembly will be held in Memphis January 8-10, 2010 at the Holiday Inn Select Memphis Airport (call 901-332-1130 or 800-465-4329 to make reservations. Hotel code: L51). Cut off for reservations is January 6, 2010.
Dave said that anybody who wants to carpool to the assembly with him can call him at 865-566-3078.
CPC/PI: Gordon gave the report. He has been exploring the possibility of getting a canned PSA that we can get from GSO for free to put on channel 12 or 20. The PSA may include the meeting schedule.
Corrections: David H., the new corrections chair, gave the report. The committee meets the first Thursday of every month at 6:30 at the Flatiron.
Treatment: Ruth gave the TC report. Gordon (CPC/PI) and Ruth will schedule a committee meeting in January.
Richard brought Grapevines to donate to treatment. Thank you, Richard!
New Business: Wayne said he has enjoyed serving over the past 10-12 years. He encouraged the new committee chairpersons to vounteer in January to continue to serve. He thanked John for his service.
First Quarter Assembly 2011: John W. said that district 50/51 (Knoxville) got the bid to host this assembly. Voted to meet on the third Thursday of the month at 6:30 at the Flatiron. We’ll elect officers at the first meeting on Jan. 21, 2010 at 6:30. Everyone is encouraged to attend and help plan the assembly. Any AA member is eligible and encouraged to serve.
Richard said Northside Group is having a Candlelight memorial meeting Dec. 24 at 10:00 pm to remember those who have passed away in the last year. If you have the name of someone, call Flat Iron, and they will add the person’s name to the list.

A new Year a new Beginning.

This Year, we are looking forward to making your Inter-group better able to meet the needs of East Tennessee. Elections have taken place and new representatives have been put in place. Your group hopes you take your responsibilities and duties seriously.

Our meetings are held every month on the first Sunday at the Rockford Fellowship Hall starting
at 1:15 and ending by 2:00. Distance and travel can be a problem as East Tennessee is a vast area. With this in mind any representative can be keep informed thru the use of the Internet.

District 50/51 Representative Meeting
October 5, 2009 6:30 PM

John W. opened the meeting with the Serenity Prayer. Gordon read the 12 Traditions. Introductions were made.

The previous month’s minutes were accepted with the following correction: Kelly was nominated and elected District 51 DCM, not alternate as was written.

Treasurer’s Report: was read and accepted as written. John W. said there are currently three signatures for the account, but that we should have a fourth person. A new treasurer is to be elected in January. A motion was made that John continue as acting treasurer until a new treasurer is elected in January. Motion carried. A motion was made that Darlene write out a check to John for the assembly, to be signed by John (so he wouldn’t have to write a check to himself). Motion carried.

A check in the amount of $250 was written for the previous District 50 DCM to go to the 3rd quarter assembly, but she was unable to attend. The check has not been cashed. Darlene made a motion that John W. call Pam to see if she still has the check, and if not, to stop payment on the check. The motion carried.

Intergroup Report: Mike gave the intergroup report. Intergroup received enough donations to pay this month’s bills and to keep up the chips supply, but will run out of books soon. The hotline is still full. Mike said that John S., a long time hotline volunteer, passed away recently.
The prudent reserve is at approximately $4,200.

Assembly Info: 4th Quarter Voting Assembly will be held in Nashville October 9-11.
Corrections: George (521-6698) gave the Corrections report. Corrections Committee met Thurs., Oct. 1 at 6:30 PM at the Flatiron and discussed needs for literature in the future. Grapevines and other donations are always appreciated. When the women’s meeting starts, they will need to make a literature request. The women have been approved, and are working to bring 2 meetings a week to the women in jail. The men’s meeting is on Mondays at 7:00. Applications are available for men and women at the committee meeting the first Thursday of the month at 6:30 at the Flatiron. Correspondence forms are also available.
Annual Volunteer Orientation meeting Thursday, Oct. 8 at 7:00 PM at Maloneyville Road location.

Treatment: Ruth gave the TC report. Gave Grapevines to Serenity House Recovery Center for Men (on Magnolia Avenue). The Serenity House needs literature. Ruth requested a donation of Big Books and 12/12's from District 50/51 for the Serenity House. Wayne made a motion to give TC $100 to buy 5 Big Books and 5 12/12's to donate to the Serenity House Recovery Center for Men with the stipulation that the books stay at the Serenity House. George seconded the motion. Motion carried. If you want to help carry the AA message to alcoholics who are in treatment, hospitals, and halfway houses in our district, please contact Ruth at 310-7889. If you know of a treatment facility in our district that needs help obtaining AA literature, information, meetings, speakers, etc., please let her know.

Grapevine: No Grapevine report. John W. reminded everyone to save their old Grapevines and bring them to the next meeting so they can be donated to Corrections and Treatment.

Our 7th tradition tells us we are self-supporting. Your Intergroup depends on Group donations to provide the services needed.

In East Tennessee your Intergroup donations are received from less than 1/3rd of the Groups. We realize that many groups do not collect that much in donations.We also realize that groups do not think that only giving small amounts helps. $5.00 and $10.00 a month goes a long way in maintaining YOUR Inter-group office.

Previous months minutes were accepted as written

Mike gave the Intergroup report. Financially the office is doing ok but could always use donations. All hotline shifts are filled. There may be an opening at some point. The hotline coordinator is Kathy K not Kathy B as was written in the previous months minutes. The Westminster Group has changed its name to the Lakeshore Group.

4^th Quarter Assembly will be held Oct 9-11. Jim R is the contact person. The number to possibly get a last minute reservation is (615) 390-9854. More structure changes will be discussed. This is a voting Assembly, so will be a long one.

CPC/PI – Gordon said he called Macy and they will be getting together so he can get the information she has.

Corrections – George said that Ken and David went to the workshop. Debbie is the new CFC chair. Treatment and Bridging the Gap programs were discussed. George stressed the importance of a newly released inmate attend their first AA meeting within 24 hours. When this happens there is an 85% recovery rate. Ways to handle problems in meetings were discussed. The next meeting of the Corrections Committee will be October 1^st 6:30PM at the Flatiron. It is still the 1^st Thursday of each month. George has applications and correspondence information. There is no more jail correspondence. Only prisons are eligible.

Grapevine – Keep collecting Grapevines for Corrections and Treatment. If possible buy a subscription it is a great magazine.

Treatment – Need speakers for the Friday night meetings.

I would like to take this time to pass on the condolences of East Tennessee Intergroup to the family and friends of Bernie Mac. Bernie's wife Ruth passed out of our world on August 27. She will be missed by all of Bernie's friends in the Mc Minn County area. Our prayers go out to you.

Great Job! For you who attended the State Convention over Labor Day I am hoping you got as much out of it as I did.To Charlie C. (DCM) and his committee from District 4 thank you for all you did and how it was put together.

Old Business

Ben advised on-line edition is getting about 4 hits a day. He is going to make a Flyer to hand out to groups, promoting the blog.

Bridging-the-Gap program is put on hold as we do not have

a co-ordinator. Message was given to GSR's at District meetings about this.

New Business

12 Step List - Kathy advised that she is having a problem with

Loudon County. The females that are on 12 step list have either moved or had new phone numbers. She has only one contact there.

Birthday information is needed from most of the groups in east Tennessee. Send them to me and we will get your group birthdays published.

We will use the State Convention as our next meeting.

Doris stepped down as the Hotline Coordinator and Kathy B has taken over. All shifts are filled. The Bridging the Gap program is trying to be started up again and it was asked for all to go back to their groups to let them know. The next Intergroup meeting will be in September at the Convention which will be held Labor Day weekend..

The next Assembly will be in Nashville Oct 9-11. It will be a long one. It will be held at the Maxwell House Motel. All GSR’s need to get their paperwork done and turned in so they will be ready for January. The theme will be Service. All groups need to elect their GSR’s in September. Group change forms available online at www.area64assembly.org. We will host the 2011 1st Quarter Assembly at the Crowne Plaza. John W will make copies of all the stuff from the last Assembly we had hosted and send that in. The numbers for reservations for the State Convention are 1-800-457-4460 and 1-615-259-4343

Corrections – George said the Corrections Committee meeting time has changed to 7PM. It is still at the Flatiron the 1st Thursday of every month. He thanked Mike for getting that put into the Newsletter. There is to be a workshop in Gallatin. Women are still trying to get approval to go into the Detention Facility. The workshop will be held August 14-16.

Grapevine – Please keep on collecting old Grapevines to donate to Treatment and Corrections. If possible, buy a subscription it is a great magazine.

Treatment – Ruth – She needs volunteers to speak on Friday nights and would like to get a list of contact people. Her telephone number is 301-7889.

Old Business

Wayne said he talked to some folks about the Prudent Reserve and they all said basically the same thing. Be careful where the money is spent or groups will stop sending. At least ¾ of the group should be in agreeance. District can help groups but not with rent or coffee. The groups should be sending representatives to each District meeting.

We are still looking for someone to step forward and co-ordinate the Bridging-the-Gap program. Contact me if you're interested or not sure but have questions about the commitment. You can also speak to me at the State Convention. You do not have to be an inter-group or General Service Representative to fulfill this commitment. Any member

in good standing with 2 years of continuous sobriety is welcome to at least inquire.

Election time for many Groups comes this September. When we elect or re-elect a representative in our Group to the Trusted Servant position of General Service Representative

or Inter-group Representative we need to instill in that person that they are not just accepting a title but a Group responsibility. That entails attending a Service meeting when they are scheduled, carrying a message to the service meeting and bringing the details of the service meeting back to their group.

Are you ready for San Antonio? Your Group (if you're registered with GSO) should have received a packet in August. You GSR also should have received one. You can also go up on the website Alcoholics Anonymous and get information. Registration will begin on SEPT 1st .

We will be using the State Convention for our Sept. meeting. Their will be an Inter-Group work shop at 4:30 Sat. Every one is invited to attend not just Inter-group Representatives.Hope to see you at the Convention.

I'm having my left knee replaced August 25th so I'll be hobbling around an easy target for any questions!

Metro Group will return to it's regular meeting room on September 11th, at Saint John's Episcopal Church. Go down the stairs closest to the front door at the corner of West Cumberland Ave. and Walnut Street. The "Friends of Bill W." plaque welcomes you at the bottom of the steps.

Saint John's has a Prayer Labyrinth in the courtyard that is open to anyone. They have Guided Meditation each Thursday at 11:15 AM, in the chapel. Lunch is served on Thursday, for $5.00, after the meeting. Please, join us this fall.

We voted to have an intergroup person attend the District 4 meeting to report on intergroup, answer any questions about intergroup and act as a liaison between Intergroup and the District 4 GSR's as we do with District 50/51.

Mike gave the Intergroup report. Doris is still Hotline Coordinator and now has a Co-Coordinator. He got some donations and restocked some supplies. He thanked everyone for their contributions. All Hotline shifts are full.

The next Assembly will be at the Clarion Hotel in Murfreesboro. Two proposals to be voted on. The first is to change the service manual to reflect the change of amount forwarded to the Host Committee to $750. Wayne said that is already in effect, it just hasn’t been put into the manual yet.. The second is All Area 64 Conventions to be held over the Labor Day weekend unless approved by the Assembly body. It’s important not to schedule an Area Assembly that will be back to back to an Area Convention.

Area 64 is to host the 2011 Assembly. John A. has the information. John W. has the information about the one that was held here in 2008. Need to review the budget. Wayne moved to present it to the Assembly body. Jim R seconded.

New Business

Wayne said to stay current with the State all groups need to do their elections for GSR in Sept. A motion was made to give the DCM’s the money to go to the Assembly. George said there is a Corrections workshop coming up and will need money to go. Next month we will discuss having a Prudent Reserve and how much it should be. John W asked everyone to take it back to their groups and ask what they think it should be. And about District donating to groups.

$12.00 was collected in the 7th Tradition hat.

I hope to see a good contingent of East Tennessee membership at the State Convention over Labor Day Weekend. For the A. A. membership that is unaware of the function of Intergroup a work shop will be held on Sat. Afternoon. This is not limited to Intergroup reps but is for ALL our membership. We will give an overview of Intergroup's function and answer any questions you may have.Please take time to come to this workshop.

I would also remind you that the General Service office will be taking reservations for the International Convention. They will start booking Sept 1. For more information on the State Convention or the International Convention speak to your GSR or your Intergroup Rep. Don't know who your group reps are or if you even have one ask around if you don't have one get one elected!

How important was it for someone to introduce you to the A. A. Fellowship when you came out of Rehab?

If you were taken to meetings, what a start you were given on your Sobriety Road. If you weren't, what a longer road to travel.

Our Chair Person for The Bridging the Gap program had to step down (personal and business problems) just as he was working on getting it organized. He left the job open to you. All you need to do is give me a call or send me an e-mail.

The only requirement is 2 years of continuous sobriety and the desire to GIVE BACK WHAT WAS SO FREELY GIVEN TOO YOU!

How do I know he left the commitment to you? That is the answer you have to give...

Mike gave the Intergroup report. Supplies are being exhausted quickly and he isn’t able to restock at this time. Intergroup is in need of donations. Doris has resumed the Hotline Coordinator position. Call her or Pete O’N. if you would like to help.

Assembly Info – The next Assembly will be in Murphreesboro July 17-19. The State Convention will be held at the Glenstone Lodge in Gatlinburg Sept 4-6. The group rate has been extended throughout the Labor Day weekend.

CPC – Gordon said Macy will give to him the information she has.

No Archives report

Corrections – George has applications for correspondance. The next Corrections Committee meeting will be this Thursday and every first Thursday of every month 6:30PM at the Flatiron.

Grapevine had no report

Treatment – Chuck said the books have been picked up and delivered and he thanked the District for the funds to buy them. Wayne asked about the situation with Serene Manor and Chuck said there has been no word yet.

Still in need of Grapevine donations for Treatment and Corrections.

New Business

Chuck asked if financially Intergroup would be able to function through the summer. Mike said probably. The 5:30 Unity Group is now meeting on Monday, Wednesday and Friday per their groups conscience agreement. The meeting schedule now on weekends are as follows:

New Beginnings

Saturday 9:00AM – 10:30

Sunday 9:30 – 10:30AM

Speaker meeting is on the last Thursday of every month and is also birthday night. This is the only speaker meeting help at the Flatiron.

The Upper Room as started a book study meeting Wednesday evenings at 7:30.

7th Tradition hat was passed and $12 was collected.

The meeting closed with the Lord’s Prayer.
